Does Penmac Take Money out of Your Check?

Did you know that if you’re a Penmac employee you can access your pay stub online each week? Penmac employees get paid weekly and can view all your wages and deductions on the Penmac Web Portal every Thursday. (Call your local Penmac if you need help with your login information.) Take a moment to review your pay stub to better understand your income, taxes, and other deductions.

Withholdings

Your pay stub will list withholdings, which includes federal and state taxes, Social Security, and Medicare.

  1. Federal Income – This is a partial payment of your annual income taxes that is sent directly to the government. The amount varies based on what you earn and the information that you put on your W-4.
  2. FICA – FICA stands for the Federal Insurance Contributions Act. It’s a federal payroll tax, which funds Social Security and Medicare programs. These programs provide benefits for retirees, the disabled, and children.
  3. MED EE – This is an abbreviation for the Federal Medicare/Employer-Employee tax, which funds the Medicare Health program.
  4. State Tax – This varies based on your state, but is also money withheld from your gross earnings that is paid to your state government.
  5. Garnishments – Occasionally, we will receive a court order to withhold part of an employee’s earnings to pay a debt, such as child support or a tax lien. These funds are paid to the correct agency as directed by the court order.

Benefits

The other main items on a pay stub are benefits, such as health insurance or retirements. All Penmac employees (regardless of full-time status) will be automatically enrolled in coverage upon hire. Employees have 30 days from the date of your first assignment to opt out of coverage and/or make changes to your coverage.Different coverage choices include health, accident, critical illness, dental, disability, and more!

Free Staffing

You’ll notice that there’s no deduction on your paycheck for Penmac. While many hold the common misconception that the temp agency takes money out of employees’ checks, Penmac’s services are always free to job seekers and employees. So, how do staffing agencies get paid? Penmac’s goal is simple—we want to bring job seekers and employers together. We help job seekers by learning about their skills and schedule, and finding them a position to meet their needs.

Likewise, Penmac helps businesses by taking care of the hiring process, payroll, benefits, unemployment insurance, and other HR tasks. The hiring company pays the staffing company a fee above and beyond employee wages to take care of these administration responsibilities. Penmac pays its workers according to industry averages and the wages set by the hiring company, so a forklift operator, for instance, would make approximately the same salary whether they work directly for a business, or work through a staffing company.
