Penmac to Provide Substitutes for North KC Schools

North Kansas City Schools has named Penmac Education Staffing to provide substitute teachers beginning in the fall 2023 semester.

About Penmac’s Substitute Program

Penmac Staffing, which was founded in Springfield, MO in 1988 to provide HR services, started its Education Staffing division in 2014. It currently serves 20 school districts in Missouri, with more districts slated to use Penmac for the 2023-2024 school year. The Education Staffing division helps districts recruit, screen, train, and schedule substitute teachers and paraprofessionals.

Penmac employs the substitutes, rolling over current substitutes to Penmac payroll. The district still sets substitute pay rates. For substitutes, the transition will primarily mean they have more resources available. Penmac offers weekly pay, affordable health care options from day one, retirement benefits after one year of employment, and ongoing coaching and professional development opportunities. Substitutes can set preferences for the subject matter, grade level, and buildings they want to work in. They can also choose when they want to work, a huge advantage in today’s labor market.

For the district, Penmac will take care of HR challenges like recruitment, screening, training, and coaching. Across the state, Penmac is currently filling 89% of positions for schools with enrollment that ranges from 300 – 24,000 students.

A New Partnership

Leaders from both organizations are looking forward to a great relationship. “Penmac is honored to partner with the well-respected North Kansas City School District. We look forward to providing management of substitute staffing needs this fall,” said David Steward, Penmac’s Director of Client Relations and Business Development. “Our goal is to provide substitutes with industry-leading training, coaching, and an overall quality employee experience so that students benefit from high quality learning experiences when the teacher has to be absent. We look forward to building a strong and successful partnership with the district in fulfilling its quest to be Relentless Champions for All Students.”

Dr. Chris McCann, Human Resources Executive Director for North Kansas City Schools said, “We are excited to partner with Penmac to fill substitute teaching positions at North Kansas City Schools. Ensuring our students have quality teachers in the classroom is a top priority. We look forward to working with Penmac to create a positive learning experience for our students.”

How to Become a Substitute

Those interested in subbing for North Kansas City Schools, including those who have worked with the district in the past, should apply online at www.penmaceducation.com. Substitute teachers are required to have a Substitute Certificate issued by the Department of Education (DESE) and need to pass multiple background checks. Penmac will also announce dates this summer where staff will be onsite at the district onboarding substitutes.
