Staying Positive at Work

We all occasionally have bad days, but how can you make sure you stay positive? Not only is a bad mood unpleasant for yourself and those around you, but it can have negative effects on your health, and can even affect your productivity. A positive attitude leads to improved productivity and motivation, not to mention will contribute to a happier workplace. Read below for five things you can do to stay positive at work.


  1. Focus on relationships. Many of us spend most of our working hours at work, so developing good relationships with your coworkers is essential. It can improve teamwork, boost morale, and even increase productivity. For many, more time is spent at work than at home. Friendships at work can enrich your day to day life and improve attitudes. At the very least, be respectful to your coworkers. People’s moods are contagious; try to limit your time with negative people. If possible, put on headphones, leave for lunch, and take a walk when you need a break from others. It’s natural to occasionally become frustrated with the people you work with, but there are strategies you can use to make sure you keep your cool at work.


  1. Be professional. Regardless of if you work in a warehouse or an office, being professional is an important part of doing a good job. More than that, it can help boost your happiness. Being professional means conducting yourself in a way that is respectful, following rules, and doing your job well. If you don’t understand something, or become frustrated communicate with your supervisors and peers calmly and logically to resolve the situation. Even if you’re having a bad day, try not to complain excessively at work. If you make a mistake, admit to it, learn from it, and do better next time.


  1. Set goals. Do you look forward to going to work each day? If not, consider setting goals for yourself that will make you more invested in your job. Is there a certain project you feel especially passionate about? Talk to your supervisor about become more involved. Take ownership in your tasks and you will feel a greater sense of pride each day.


  1. Reduce stress. We’re all affected by stress, but there are plenty of ways to manage it. If you get in the habit of reacting calmly to situations, you will overall be in a better mood. How do you manage stress? Identify what your stressors are, develop healthy responses, and be proactive at preventing stress when you can. Make sure you’re taking time to recharge, eating a balanced diet, and getting plenty of sleep. At work, prioritize your tasks and stay organized so you won’t become overwhelmed.


  1. Make changes. If you’re continually unhappy at work, that probably means you need to change your situation. Can you talk to your supervisor about changing your responsibilities, your schedule, or your workplace? Remember, a job is just a job. Sometimes jobs are stepping stones to bigger careers. Try to keep perspective. If you can’t generally learn to accept your position, consider if it might be time to look for something new.
