It doesn’t matter where you work, you’re likely to encounter stress at some point. Both office and manufacturing settings can create stressors for employees. If you work in an office job, you might be overwhelmed with emails and phone calls. Often, interruptions are a problem when you’re trying to complete a specific task. Or, manufacturing environments can bring the stress of noise, extreme temperatures, and safety concerns. Regardless of your specific workplace, stress can take a toll on your physical and mental well-being, but there are ways to minimize and manage your workplace stress.
- Identify what is making you feel stressed. Sometimes the source of your stress might be obvious. Maybe you’re working in a warehouse and the machinery you use regularly is extremely loud. The continual noise might put you on edge. Or, it may be less easy to notice. Maybe you’re feeling overwhelmed, but can’t quite put your finger on what is bothering you. The first step to coping with your stress is to figure out what is causing it.
- Develop healthy responses. There are several things that can better equip you to dealing with any type of stress. Make sure you’re taking time to recharge, eating a balanced diet, and getting plenty of sleep. If you’re tired and hungry, even the most minor annoyances will bother you. Taking care of yourself and creating boundaries will help give you a better attitude to cope with stress.
- Be proactive. Instead of simply reacting to stressors as they come, try to prevent them when possible. For instance, if you work at a place where noise is an issue, make it a habit to use ear plugs. Another thing you can do is stay on top of deadlines instead of waiting until the last minute to finish tasks. That way, if you encounter a problem, you’ll have time to find a solution instead of creating a stressful situation.
- Prioritize and organize. In most workplace situations, you can minimize stress by prioritizing your tasks and staying organized. If you have a lot to do, or a certain quota to feel, make a list of what you need to accomplish. Start with the things that are most important or urgent, and then take it one step at a time. Whether you work in a busy manufacturing environment or in an office, keeping your area organized will help you feel less overwhelmed.
- Get support. If something is affecting your work, talk to your supervisor. They might be able to provide you with tools or strategies to deal with stressors. Or, they may be able to eliminate them altogether. Even if there isn’t a clear solution, try talking to coworkers, friends, or family. Sometimes it just helps to talk about the situation, and you never know, others might have an idea that could help.
