Feeling overwhelmed with your job search? We can help!

There’s lots of advice out there for job seekers who are looking for work, but it can feel overwhelming. At Penmac, it’s our job to simplify this process for you. Read below for ten steps that can help you find a position that’s right for you.

  1. Decide what kind of job you want. The first step to the job search process is to figure out what exactly you are looking for. Think about what you’re interested in and what sorts of industries that would best match your qualifications.

  1. Choose where you’d like to work. Once you’ve decided what field you’d like to work in, look at different companies that might be a good fit. If you’re having trouble choosing, a temp agency can be a great starting point. Temp agencies give you the opportunity to try out many different positions, and can help you get your foot in the door at a great company.

  1. Build your experience. If you’re interested in a position you don’t know much about, see if any of your local schools offer any training or certification courses. Volunteering is also a great way to gain new skills. Many businesses will also offer on-the-job training.

  1. Create a resume. The next step is to make sure you’ve got all of your information ready. You may have to do some research to find dates of past experiences, business addresses, etc. Read more about including temp work on your resume and what you should include if you’re new to the workforce.

  1. Apply for positions. Use online job sites, company websites, or a staffing agency. Pay attention to hiring procedures—some places will request an online application; others will have you stop by in person. Click here for some tips on completing applications.

  1. Be persistent. Don’t get discouraged if you don’t get hired right away. Continue submitting applications, network, and attend job fairs. Be proactive to make sure you stay on track with your job search.

  1. Interview. Your persistence will pay off, and a company will contact you to schedule an interview. Read here for some interview tips that will help you get through your interview with flying colors.

  1. Say thank you. After an interview, it’s always a great idea to say thank you. Writing a note to an HR manager to express your appreciation can set you apart from other candidates.

  1. Cope with rejection. You may not get the first job you apply to, even if you’re asked to an interview. It’s natural to feel upset, but the important thing is how you handle it.

  1. Prepare for your new job! Eventually, you’ll be hired for a job that’s a good fit. Click here to read how you can make a great impression on your first day.
